Policies

EOS is intended for general, informational use only. We have set it up as a guide to allow enterprises to find open source software and system integrators.

Projects

Projects were selected based on experience and assessed enterprise readiness. The primary goal was to identify and list projects and matching system integrators that solve common enterprise needs. A lot of weight was put on applications, infrastructure solutions as well as on components that can be integrated in a wide range of business solutions. A selection such as the EOS directory can never be complete. We therefore very much appreciate input from enterprise users and  open source communities alike. It is important to note that only project/products that are well established in the market and are fairly complete in terms of features are considered for the EOS directory. This is to keep the number of projects manageable. Projects can be proposed via email or through a special form to be found on various pages.

Ratings

Expert Ratings are compiled based on experts’ experience with the software in real-world engagements, our own use and by talking to specialists and community members around the globe. They are intended only to express the current understanding and opinion of these experts.

User Ratings are provided by EOS directory users and contributors. Users are asked to follow the same rules and criteria definitions that the experts are using for their own enterprise readiness rating.

Open Source Licenses

To differentiate true open source projects/products with a license model approved by OSI we have given these projects an "OSI approved" label. As many projects/products have multiple licenses and can be used in purely open as well as commercially restricted product versions we applied the rule that if there is an open source product that can be downloaded, used and changed according to the OSI rules, we mark it OSI approved, even if there is also a commercially restricted product available.

Finding the right Software

Software Descriptions may not provide complete information, or the opinions of all parties involved about the activities or users of any particular project. EOS users should therefore make their own informed technical, legal, and practical assessment of the capabilities of the described software and the licensing terms under which such software is offered by the authors and distributors, prior to downloading and/or using it. EOS should not be solely relied on to determinate whether the software described will be suitable for an enterprise's particular purpose.
